Consuldents has aimed to continuously highlight final year project ideas (FYP) and to ensure that we create a grass root innovation repository. This time we had a chance to review the inventive Final year project made by the students of National University of Modern languages, commonly known as NUML, Islamabad. Although NUML is a university primarily focusing on languages, but this group of students Usama, Iqra Mazhar and M Talha Umair, on seeing the modern developments in technology, opted to do something novel in technology which could benefit the society. Usama holds the prestige of the group lead and Dr. Sajid Saleem supervises their project.
The idea is basically that they are preparing a pair of gloves which helps to convert signs into language. There are 70 million people who are deaf in the world, but many people do not know how to use sign language to communicate with this community and they are designing a pair of gloves that recognizes hand gestures that correspond to words and phrases in Sign Language. Each glove contains sensors that record hand position and movement. As users put on the gloves, the device calibrates to account for differences in sensor placement. Data from the sensors is sent from the gloves wirelessly via Bluetooth to a central computer. The computer looks at the data for gestures through various sequential statistical regressions, similar to a neural network. If the data matches a gesture, then the associated word or phrase is spoken through a speaker.
The motivation behind this project is nothing but to have voice of all, the heard and provide them a tongue. Interestingly, their project also doesn’t cost much and the estimated price of this pair of gloves is PKR 30,000. The project is currently under making phase and expected to be complete on April 2020.
