FIVE REASONS WHY I LOVE MY UNIVERSITY (NUST!)
Located at the base of Islamabad, The National University of Science and Technology, or NUST as it’s known to students all over the country, is more than just an educational Institute. It’s not just an Academic Oasis, It’s not just a place filled with marvelous architecture, and it’s more than just a pathway to your profession.
NUST is a safe-haven with a pleasant atmosphere and reciprocally supportive spirit, where one can learn and grow so much in such a short span of time, giving it the shape of home away from home and a place one should be eternally grateful for.
The following is a brief look at the campus, showcasing the reasons behind my love for NUST and the basis of why I cherish every moment I spend here.
My Department – Institute of Environmental Sciences & Engineering (IESE – NUST)
In NUST, when people hear the name IESE what comes to mind is a small department, in one corner of the campus with a population that barely hits 120.
But, as Plato once remarked,
“A Good Decision is based on knowledge and not on numbers”
Although IESE might be one of the smallest departments on campus, it holds a place close to my heart not because of its curriculum, not because of its location, but because of the people within it. The apparently low strength of the department actually leads to more interaction between different batches, and lays the foundation for many friendships and amazing memories.
Something that a lot of people inside IESE secretly cherish is the roof of their building, With a view that goes as far as the Helipad ground, coupled with a breeze that make you feel like you’ve just taken a stroll down a beach, the roof of IESE is definitely something that’ll make you want to visit the department and is a major bonus for studying here!
The Central Library
NUST, known for its amazing architecture, had definitely proved its mettle yet again with the opening of the new central library. Words cannot begin to describe just how in awe it makes you feel!
Located right next to the Main Office, the Central Library is situated on an area which is significantly higher than the rest of the University, which gives it the advantage of being noticeable from almost every department on Campus.
Standing three stories tall, this library is definitely something out of a fairytale, with towers of books and a staircase of knowledge, the Library is literally a portal into the realm of fiction and creativity. Such is the attractiveness and power of its grasp that almost every day you’ll find it completely filled with students; some who you would’ve never though would actually be found studying, let alone be in a library!
The NUST Trails
Which University can boast a campus that has its own Hiking Trail? Stretching Almost a mile long, the NUST Trails are perfect for a sunny winter morning when you’re free from your classes and in the quest for an adventure!
The Trails are home two major rest stations, where there are logs carved into seats and a shed to cover the region; they make for a perfect spot to catch a view of the entire campus and just leave you mesmerized. If you’re more of an introverted person, or just someone needing some time for self-reflection, then you can easily grab some headphones, maybe something to eat and set-off on the trail. There are so many spots where one can easily sit in silence and experience some solace and peace after a hectic university routine.
The NUST Hostels
Imagine this; you wake up on a weekend, all on their own, without the need for any alarm. You look outside the window of your dormitory and watch raindrops hitting the surface of the glass. Suddenly a close friend walks into your room, bringing in a burst of Petrichor that leaves you smiling as he offers for you two to go out on the terrace and experience the weather. Life is good.
Yes, that’s how it feels to stay in the NUST Hostels surrounded by close friends with whom you party and relax and enjoy the little things that make life so enjoyable. Bonus points for the fact that NUST Hostels have a café right next to them called ‘Jango’, and each block has its own vending machine, making for it even easier to snack and chill with your gang.
The Nightlife
Now this is rather broad, but it encompasses so many things about the campus! From the Futsal Grounds of NUST Business School where you’ll find players battling each other as they try to score a winning goal, to the Helipad ground with the NUST Wall of Honor shimmering in the background and being a source of Inspiration for various individuals, or to the Late Night Jamming Sessions in the Concordia’s, where you’ll often catch a group of friends with guitars belting out tunes and singing at the top of their lungs, totally oblivious to their surrounding and just trying to rejuvenate themselves after tough days in their schools.
This Nightlife also coincides with how iconic the major buildings and landmarks on campus look, the light escaping from their windows coupled with the warm-orange color of the streetlamps makes for a very ambient surrounding where one can just sit or lie down and stare at the stars, thinking to themselves,
“I made it. I love my university.”
About the author:
“I use big words when I’m uncomfortable, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”
Whoops! I did it again,
My Name is Jaffar Abbas I’m 19 Years old and I’m currently a sophomore at IESE, NUST. I’m passionate about writing and I occasionally freelance, I’m an avid reader and other than that I’m into International Relations, Debating and Football. If you’re from NUST you’ve probably seen me through one of our societies, since I’m basically (Not Bragging) in all of them.
Well I guess that’s enough narcissism for one day. Cheers!
